Imagi-Unit - Special Targets Reconnaissance teams (SPECTRE)

It all started with an epiphany... Even in a world made mostly of imagi-nations, US Special Forces are a must have (or at least really useful) for ultra-modern games!
  • Looking for evidence of the Basranian nuclear program;
  • Supporting the Syldavian Forces response to the latest Bordurian invasion/annexation of their country;
  • "Advising" rebels in Touboutt-Chan;
  • Painting "high value targets" in Khemed...
Khrasan Miniatures DEVGRU. Picture from the manufacturer website.
The miniatures part was easy:
  • A couple of teams of Khurasan Miniatures DEVGRU (shop closed, no link!);
  • An Italeri MH-X Silent Hawk (I prefer to call it Ghost Hawk myself) 1/100 diecast;
  • And a pair of Rebel Minis not-Oshkosh M-ATV (I know those aren't really SF vehicles but they look cool!);
Nothing too ambitious right? Just wait for it...

On the fluff front though, as they aren't nearly enough real-world SF units, I had to make up my own...

Tommorow's Wars meets Horizon Wars - A 6mm Democratic People's Republic of Glory (DPRG) Battlegroup?

Although Horizon Wars and Tommorow's Wars have nothing but the editor and book production value, reading the recently bought former inspired me to (beside buying a 6mm British Battlegroup) go back at the later to look at some miniature porn!

It's not the first time I think about gaming in that universe: I already wrote down some thoughts about which infantry models to use for the Republic of Arden and for the Democratic People Republic of Glory...

Brazilian built grav tanks are starting to equip select People's Republic Guard formation (the one that didn't displease Dear Leader). All pictures (except the Darghaur hereunder) from their manufacturer website.

New Guinea War (2099) - Pacific Federation versus Indonesian Republic - 15mm Sci Fi

ADHD strikes again... Here I was browsing miniatures porn on Brigade Models website and minding my own business when I clicked on "6mm" and found a link to the "New Guinea War" campaign on Wessex Games website... Take a few oldies but goodies add a pinch of new releases, google some paint schemes and roundels et voilĂ !

Computer Games Imagi-Nations - ArmA 3 - Altis Armed Forces

The Armed Assault (ArmA) series website as long been in my browser favourites and an exemple of nicely done imagi-nations with exaclty the sort of information and details one needs for wargaming purposes. I've never played the games themselves (from what I've read, they're quite good but their realism and steep learning curve puts them outside the reach of the casual gamer that I am) but ArmA 2 Chernarus (a civil war ridden post-Soviet republic) and neighbouring Takistan (basicaly not-Afghanistan) were instumental in me "finding out" imagi-nations as a way to actually play with ultra-moderns minis without stressing my suspention of disbelief too much!

I recently ventured into the ArmA 3 part of the site and discovered the islands of Altis and Stratis and the fight of the NATO and Altis Armed Forces (AAF) to repel the Canton Protocol Strategic Alliance Treaty (CSAT) invasion... Another great looking imagi-nation, original factions and a very interesting weapon mix on the very edge of near future sci fi... What's not to love?

Altis Armed Forces. Screenshot from developer website.

So let's take a look at the "independents" from the game, the AAF, their gear and the best way to model them in 15mm and 6mm (not sure what scale I'd rather go for this yet)... As usual, this is just a much a place for me to consolidate info and links I gather than an actual post for your edification ;-)

Minus 15 degrees: 15mm Frostgrave - Modular terrain

With my gaming group X-Wing Miniatures campaign coming to a close (the Empire controls 42,5% of the Minos Cluster so far), I'm looking for a new game for our 2016 campaign...

Although I'm trying to push Five Parsecs from Home forward, I'm not sure the group is ready for it... Most of us have been fed exclusively from the Games Workshop tit (although I'm not sure they were the ones being milked) with X-Wing as the single, so far, significant exception: we're used to one point shopping games where we get everything from a single provider: shiny rule book with official background, lists and miniatures lines...

Another game that's been brought forward and that might prove an easier threshold to step over is Frostgrave:

Game design thoughts - A drone-centric sci-fi game...

Delta Vector recent post got me thinking... Enough that I'll write it down in a post rather than just making a reply to his.

One of the newer GZG drones, armed with missiles... Pictures from manufacture's website.

So starting with these specific ideas (just a few of the one in Delta Vector post, go and read it, in fact while you're at it, go and read all his "game design" posts)...
  • In an EW-dominated battlefield, an unhackable human (with a gun aimed via a Mk.1 eyeball which can't be fooled by EW chicanery) still has an important place;
  • Remotes are powerful, but can be jammed and have vulnerable operators, vulnerable to EMP;
  • Hackers act like "wizards" who can hack (...) robots (...);
  • Combined arms might be a balance of robotic and conventional humans, rather than the armour-infantry meaning it has today;
And adding a few of my own (whithout much of a structure, brainstorming here)...

Gunners Painting Service

What it says on the lid: Gunners from Gunners Wargaming is launching his painting service! And his having a give away comp to stimulate us blogger talking about it!

GZG Crusties, painted by Gunners

So here's my part...

I found out about Gunners during the Titanium Dropship Painting Competition I ran on Dropship Horizon last year and nearly refused his entry for being 28mm (DH has a strict "15mm only" policy!), then I had a second look and saw that his Blood Angels termies and his Leman Russ tank actually where insanely talented 15mm scratchbuilt models! I went on browsing his blog and found out he had entire scratchbuilt and painted entire armies of 15mm Space Marines, Death Corps of Krieg, Tau, Orks, Plague Marines... To mention only his not-40K products (or 20K as I call half-scaled 40K minis)!

15mm? You bet!
Pricing looks fair enough but Gunners is located in N.S.W. (Northern Southern Western?) Australia so shipping will probably make it unfordable for me... But check it:

Comics Imagi-Nations - Sylvdadian 1st Motor Infantry Company

Shortly after the Bordurian invasion, a meeting was held between the British War Office and the military attaché at the Syldavian Embassy in London. It was decided to regroup surviving elements of the Syldavian armed forces in the British Khemed Protectorate. Three days later, the Syldavian army capitulated, but King Muskar XII called for all Syldavian soldiers to join him in exile.

The Free Syldavian Forces grew in number and the decision was made to combine the infantry, artillery, armoured vehicles and engineers into one homogenous fighting unit. It became the Sylvdadian 1st Motor Infantry Company under the command of Major Stûût.

With a member of my gaming group showing quite a bit of enthusiasm for that whole  "imagi-nations drawn from Franco-Belgian comics as backdrop for wargaming" business, the Syldavian and Bordurian armies are slowly moving out of Gedankenexperiment territory and becoming (yet another) actual project.

I just love the look of those things! Picture from the Battlefront website.
Looking at WW2 rules systems, Chain of Command seems to be the current bleeding edge of tactical games. Five Men in Normany looks like tons of fun too, but I'd like the option to include a couple of vehicles (for the "oooooh, shiny!" factor if anything else, so 5MiN is probably too restrictive.

The "period" (a fluid concept when dealing with imagi-nations) isn't set in stone either but something WW2-ish, and more specifically late-WW2-ish, seems the way to go if we want to use most rules as they come, without any conversion or anything...

So the Bordurians invaded Syldavia (again) sometimes after the events of King Ottokar's Sceptre. The Syldavians took sometimes to rebuild their strength under the British aegis and are now back to reclaim their homes!

Looking at the list at the end of Chain of Command, the basic German infantry platoon rules should fit the Bordurian occupation forces quite well as long as we stay clear of the more shiny options on the support list (no Sturmtigers!).

As far as the Syldavian forces were concerned I'm making the following call: Syldavia is mostly Belgium with a layer of Balkan painted over. So I'll take the "1944" page of my country history and downsize the Piron Brigade to a reinforced company (Syldavia being even smaller than Belgium)...

Syldavia as enough Muslims for minaret (and thus mosque) to show in the various towns depicted by Hergé. From a modelling point of view, it would be a shame not to include some of those Djellaba wearing guys (leaving aside de Adrian helmets and keeping only the Brodie ones). Not sure yet if I want them in a separate "ethnic" unit or spread among the regular ones... It seems fitting to call them Bashi-bazouks: the word is both an irregular soldier in the Ottoman Empire and a favourite expletive of Captain Haddock!
So a British Motor Platoon it is! Looking at the support lists and with the Piron Brigade as a guide I can easily figure out which options fit with the Stûût Company theme:
  • List 1 and 2: no problem there, everything goes;
  • List 3: loose the M5, the scout car must be a Daimler Dingo and everything else is fine;
  • List 4: drop the recce car;
  • List 5: only the UC recce section, the 6 pdr ATG and the armoured car (a Daimler I) can be chosen;
  • List 6: a Syldavian detachment of the No. 10 (Inter-Allied) Commando counting as "regular airborne section with junior leader" is the only option available on list 6;
  • List 7, 8 and 9: nothing of that caliber was available to the Stûût Company!
After the liberation of Sydavia, the Stûût Company became the core of a new Syldavian Army. The Company's artillery and armoured units were reorganised into specialized battalions while the engineers joined a newly formed engineers company. The Bashi-bazouks were regrouped in an "ethnic" unit and the remaining infantry became the Syldavian 1st Mechanised Infantry Battalion.

Comics Imagi-Nations - Sultanate of Khemed

"Khemed is afictional country in The Adventures of Tintin, the comics series by Belgian cartoonist Hergé. It is an Arab emirate located on the shores of the Red Sea and has been compared toJordan, with its Emir resembling the Hashemite kings and the character Mull Pasha corresponding to the British General Glubb Pasha. Khemed is depicted in Land of Black Gold and The Red Sea Sharks. The name means "got it!" in Marols, the Brussels Flemish dialect. The names of many people and places in the country are based on Marols phrases." - Wikipedia

ADHD strikes again: after tackling Borduria, I started researching the Syldavian military... And ended up writing this post after pretty much unrelated (other than being a Tintin fictional country, that is) Khemed!

Unlike Borduria and Syldavia, quite a lot is seen about the Khemed military... Because of all this canon material, there is also quite a lot of great Khemed-based models to be found on the web.

Infantry:
The Khemed military is shown wearing British style battledress with Keffiyeh (either orangish in Land of Black Gold or red and white checkered in The Red Sea Sharks. Given my scale of choice, a single colour is probably wiser.

Picture from the Land of Black Gold comic.

Comics Imagi-Nations Wargamin - Bordurian "Invâsiôn"

"Borduria is a fictional country in The Adventures of Tintin, the comics series by Belgian cartoonist Hergé. It is located in the Balkans and has a rivalry with the fictional neighbouring country of Syldavia. Borduria is depicted in King Ottokar's Sceptre and The Calculus Affair, and is referred to in Tintin and the Picaros." - Wikipedia

I want my Bordurian stone to kill several specific birds:
  • Be usable as not-Germans for any WW2 rule set I'd like to give a try
  • Be the bad guys to my Syldavian in any interbellum/early-WW2/pulp scenario I'd want to play
  • Use readily available miniatures without requiring any conversion but a non-standard paint job
  • Yet, have a clear "those aren't your mom-and-pop WW2 Germans" feel to them
Flames of War miniatures, picture from the manufacturer website.
Beyond its fascist regime and use of Messerschmitt Bf 109 (and apparently of some Heinkel made bomber in the earlier 1939 version of the comic), little is know about the Bordurian military...

So here is a first and obviously personal take on it...

Comics Imagi-Nations - Syldavia & Borduria

With my work life on the verge of a revolution, I've put a big hold on my gaming spending. And I could sure use this break in the influx of new miniatures to actually paint something and make a dent in my mountain of unpainted lead. But of course I just keep coming up with new cool (and entirely unrelated to any already existing project) ideas instead...

As most of my ideas this one involved several existing "meh" concepts (an entirely subjective concept of course) suddenly clicking together into something exciting! Like that whole "Quar infantry + All Quiet on the Martian Front vehicules + Memoir 44 rules = Awesome" business...

Girls und Panzer with 15mm tanks

Sensha-dĹŤ ("the way of tanks") is a traditional martial art for girls and a national  (Japanese, where else) championships is held amongst high schools.  And it's not just a sport: tanks are an integral part of the society: you've got tanks shops (with models, clothing, gadgets...), tanks themed restaurants (with remote controlled tanks delivering tank shaped cakes to the tables, Ă  la "sushi boats"), tanks inspired bentĹŤs...

I first read about the Girls und Panzer anime on the 15mm Sci Fi TMP board where a tentative to spark enough interest to commission a range of 15mm tank crewing Japanese school girls went all the way to "it's child pornography!" and back (which is a fine illustration than negative publicity is first and foremost publicity!) Well, I just finished watching it with my wife and except for the very short (but never revealing) skirts, we had a hard time seeing anything to it but a refreshing coming of age story (albeit one with a surrealist premise) with lovingly depicted tanks. Something I'll definitely watch again with my children.

The heroes having tea and cakes on their Beloved Pz IV, in front of their school-carrier! What's not to love?
I have never had much interest in WW2 wargaming (nor in most historic wargaming but for the most ultra-modern things) but all of sudden I have an urge to buy WW2 tanks... Not sure what sort of game I'd use them for so it might just remain a Gedankenexperiment but if I'm going to browse the GuP wiki and WW2 miniatures webstores, I might as well consolidate my findings somewhere...

Oorai (the heroes' school, using a mismatched assortment of tanks from different countries, each decorated with both the school logo but also with the team mascot, hence the most intersting to model):

Ooarai Girls High School logo
The five initial teams:
  • Anglerfish Team: a Panzer IV (Ausf. D at the series start, upgraded to F2 for the semi-finals and to H for the final)
  • Turtle Team (the student council): a Panzer 38(t) converted to a Hetzer for the final
  • Hippo Team (the history club): a Stug III Ausf. F
  • Duck Team (the defunct volleyball team): a Type 89 I-go
  • Rabbit Team (first year students): a M3 Lee

Three more teams are added trough the series:
  • Mallard Team (the hall monitors) is added before the semi-finals: a Char B-1 bis
  • Anteater Team (a group of online gamers) only takes part to the final: a Type 3 Chi-Nu
  • Lion Team (the automotive club) is also a last minute addition the final line-up: a Tiger (P)
Procurement:
  •  I like the Hetzer better than the Panze 38(t) and it would be kind of a pity not to include the three late-comer teams to the "army", so I'll go for the final configuration (i.e. with a Hetzer and a Panzer IV Aufs. H)
  • I found this comparison really nice article comparing Tigers from different manufacturer!
  • Battlefront is the major player in WW2 15mm and has everything I'd need in store except the Type 3 Chi-Nu. Prices are £12.50 for most tanks and £14 for the larger ones (Tiger and Char B), only the Type 89 seems to be only available as £52 full (5 plastic tanks) platoon...
  • Peter Pig seems to be the reference for sculpt and casting... They've got the Panzer IV Ausf. H (£7), the StuG III is only available in Ausf. G, the earliest version available of the Tiger is the mid production I one, the Char B1 isn't the "bis" variant and they've got no M3 Lee nor any of the Japanese tanks.
  • Quality Casting appears to make slightly smaller models (1/108 instead of 1/100 or even 1/95) than Battlefront or Peter Pig. They've got the Pz IV, Lee and the Type 89 ($10 each)!
  • Command Decision has everything but the Japanese but only sells $25 three-packs...
  • QRF has everything (£6) but the Porsche Tiger and Type 3. But I've bought a couple of models from them before (French Puma helicopters) and wasn't overly impressed with the sculpt/casting...
  • The Plastic Soldier Company has single sprues for £5.25 each: the Panzer IV sprue allow to build a Ausf. F1, F2, H or G, so far so good; the Tiger I kit as part for early, mid and late production model, not familiar enough with WW2 tanks yet to figure out if I can build a Porsche one out of it and the Stug III kit as part for Ausf. F8 or G, probably close enough for my purposes. That's it: no hetzer, no Lee, no Char B and no Japanese tanks, but even using just the three available models shaves 20 pounds off the Battlefront shopping cart. And The Plastic Soldier Company might also be a good place to shop for the other schools that use more common tanks and usually several of a given type.
  • Forged in Battle as the Pz IV H and the Hetzer as singles for £7
  • The only place where I seem to be able to find the Type 3 is Gaming Models (just $5 but postage is gonna be a bitch for just the one model).
Painting:
  • The first match sees the Ooarai fielding an array of brightly painted tanks. Although nice looking (and making sense from a story point of view), it's not really my thing.
The StuG III original scheme!

  • From the second match on, the tanks are reverted to more subdued shades but remain a mismatch of national colours: Panzergrau for most Germans, Dunkelgelb for the Hetzer, olive drab for the Lee and some sort of tan/olive/khaki for the Japanese and French tanks
Part of Ooarai final line-up.

  • I'd probably not stick to the canon on this particular issue and go for a single school colour for all Ooarai tanks (I like nicely uniform things, sue me) and paint all of them Panzegrau (i.e. Army Painter Uniform Grey; and don't go all button counting on me, even discarding the entire debate of what Panzergrau actually looked like, the issue of variations in the field, or the fact that scale models usually need to be painted lighter than the original thing, I'm not actually trying to emulate any historical unit!)
  • Company B makes GuP various school and teams logo in both 28mm and 20mm and does custom work... Shouldn't be too much of a problem to get them in 15mm!

Organization of Unobtainium Exporting Planets miniatures painted by Micropanzer

They took a while to get there (according to USPS, they went form Brussels (Belgium) to Nashua (NH) to Jamaica (NY) to Opa Locka (FL), back and forth three times between Opa Locka and Miami (FL), then to Kansas City before ending up in Blue Springs  (MO), the entire trip taking just under a month) but Jason at Micropanzer just finished the miniatures I commissioned him to paint for my Organization of Unobtainium Exporting Planets faction!

The Benthians

The Benthians are one of the two sentient species indegenous to the deep oceans of the New Halifax colony. Benthians are small aquatic humanoids with squid-like faces. They share their home world with the Archipelians, shark-like humanoids living in the shallow waters surrounding New Halifax few islands. Both species evolved and reached sentience independently, their respective biotopes remote from each other.

Although the Benthians look more like those guys, I
intend their narrative role to be closer to that of the
Mon Cal... Picture from Wookiepedia.

Gruntz 15mm (v1.1) - 15mm Sci-Fi Skrimish Wargaming by Robin Fitton

OK guys, this one is waaaaay overdue: I've had the book on my desk for a month and told Robin I'd aim at a review within two weeks or so. Guess what, Real Life messed those plans. Sorry, Robin! Anyway...

Be advised:
  • Robin actually sent me a copy of his book free of charge in exchange of me doing this post. I'll obviously do my best  to remain honest reviewing it. See next point though...
  • As with all my reviews, I do believe that objectivity is a fiction and that bias, conscious or unconscious, is inevitable. Bias, however, does not equal dishonesty, as long as you don't hide it under the pretence of objectivity. Long story short: this review is a mix of hard facts (book description, chapters organisation, page count, rule descriptions) and of personal feelings (things I like and others I don't based on my gaming experience and tastes).
  • This review is based on a couple of reading of the rulebook but I haven't had a chance to play the game yet...
Introduction:
Gruntz is the brain children of Robin Fitton, while it started as a single handled effort by a garage based enthousiast, the book I have in my hands (well not quite, I'm typing right now) has all the trimmings of a professional production (ok, maybe not the sheer bling of current GW books, but frankly it's suppose be wargame rules, not enluminated holy scriptures).

The rules are available from Wargame Vault as watermarked PDF ($14), softcover ($29.06) and PDF+softcover deal (usualy $43.06 but reduced to $33.56 as I write).

Tomorrow's Wars - Republic of Arden (RA) - Arden Rangers

LtCol Baugnée, current CO of the Chasseurs Ardenais.
Picture from Begian MoD website.

In Tomorrow's Wars (TW) official background, the Democratic People's Republic of Glory (DPRG) nemesis is Republic of Arden (RA) which maintain strong military but also cultural links with France.

Most pictures in the TW rulebook seems to indicate that (just like most world visited by Stargate teams) Glory (the planet where both the DPRG and the RA are located) has a earth-like ecosystem with abundant evergreens...

Being Belgian, the obvious association is to the Ardennes region, a heavily hilled and forested region spreading across Belgian, German and French Frontiers and covering most of Luxembourg.

One of the most quirky units of the Belgian military are the Chasseurs Ardennais (litteraly Ardennes Hunters), a mechanized infantry battalion known (among other things) for their oversized Basque-style green berets and their wild boar mascots...

Sounds like a nicely characterful unit for a Glory based campaign! A while back, when I saw Khurasan Sepulvedans Jungle Fighters, I thought their berets to be a little too large... Sounds like I got just the right use for them, no? Meet the Arden Rangers, an elite (but not SF) unit of the Arden National Guard (ANG).
Khurasan Sepulvedan Jungle Fighters. Picture from manufacturer website.

The Sepulvedan Provisional Army Regulars can then either be used as alternate pose (Chasseurs wearing helmets) or as another ANG unit. Same thing for the Sepulvedan Resistance and horse-mounted scouts which will make good irregulars or militia!

Add your choice of vehicles, some French Foreign Legion allies (GZG's for example), the odd USMC advisors team and, together with a DPRG force, you've got everything you need for the Second Glory War!

Tomorrow's Wars - Democratic People's Republic of Glory (DPRG) - North Korean in spaaaaace!

One of GZG DPRG packs. Picture from manufacturer's website.
Having recently received By Dagger and Talon, and reread Tomorrow's Wars background... While I had initially pegged one of the main faction, the Democratic People's Republic of Glory (DPRG), as "Chineses in space", the concomitant release of Khurasan ultra-modern North-Koreans made me reconsider...

Ground Zero Games actually has an officially licensed range of Tomorrow's Wars miniatures, including some DPRG infantry. And although I'm pretty sure they'll be up to GZG standards and impeccable sculpts and casting, they don't "sing" to me and my feeling is "just another line of near-future infantry".

 The DPRG fields two main tiers of troops: the Democratic People's Army (DPA) is "a mixture of conscipts and volunteer and is haphazaedly trained and equipped" while the Democratic People's Guard is "comprised entirely of volunteers and soldiers cherry-picked from DPA's best units" (quotes from Tomorrow War's rulebook).
Khurasan North-Koreans in flapped hats, also available in helmets.
Picture from manufacturer's website.
See me coming? In my imagination, the DPA does now look like Khurasan North-Korean, while the DPG will equipped with the Nova Respublik Crimson Army equipment...

Sure they've got 20th century AK-Something, but honestly, with the similarity between the 40s AK-47 and the 90s AK-101, it wouldn't stretch my disbelief too much to have DPA fielding a AK-200 or 300 and call it a re-chambered, polymer-made, possibly 3D-print low-cost high-reliability (no-so-)near-future weapon. Just paint them something less middle-of-the-20th-century (i.e. loose the wooden parts). Which is exactly the road Tomorrow's Wars takes: the Imperial Russians use AK-200 Advanced Combat Rifles and DPRG a local knock-off, the AK-400.
With plenty of near-future not-russians vehicles to choose you've got pretty much you need for a full DPRG contigent. Some favorites of mine: the variants of the Red Banner MBT will make great Chonma-Ho or Dear Leader, the new not-BTR is exactly what the DPA needs and the not-Hind doesn't really fit any official DPRG  vehicle, but it's too good of a model not to use!

Nothing ground breaking in all that rambling, but chalk it on sheer personal preferences, Soviets in spaces wasn't doing anything for me while North-Koreans in Space has me all excited...

Khurasan Nova Respublik infantry.Picture from manufacturer's website.
I'll probably add a third tier of troops: irregular peasant soldier's, using some Vietnam-era VC minis (maybe those) as cheap canon fodder, or alternatively has insurgents for some internal policing actions.

What would be cool to go with those (John: hint)...
  • A couple of Nova Respublik troops with the the NK flapped hats would be really cool and enhance (like it needs it!) both that range sexiness  on its own and it's compatibility with the NK.
  • A couple of caracterfull VIP (Dear Leader and wife) would make great characters, objectives, pulp vilains... Something a bit like those excellent African dictator, wife and kid (28mm unfortunately) by Matakishi's Tea House.
  • And maybe a couple of female body guards (parading with leg above the waist would be funny, but not terribly usefull on a game table; I'd rather go for some sensible pose).

My Grand Unifying Background (GUB)

The Terran Alliance logo, should
be fairly easy to paint
With my minis across the pond (somewhere in customs at JFK according to the tracking system) and well on their way to Jason from Micropanzer, it's quite time to settle on a painting scheme! So here is the first part of my thinking process....

With quite a few kilograms (and euros) of unpainted lead and resin on my shelves, for various manufacturers and range, I spent ages agonizing and generally procrastinating on a global painting plan...

The latest idea is to split my collection in two big meta-faction:
  • On one hand the Terran Alliance will be made of various mostly human armies using relatively low tech/near future equipment (i.e. mostly wheeled, tracked or legged stuff with a few cutting edge early grav).
    Sub-factions will/could include:
    • The Terran Marine Corps: the ground forces branch of the Terran Navy, a federated space force under the control or a federal earthwide government (think United Nations on steroids)
    • National (or meta-national) armies: US, China, European Federation, Pacific Federation, Russia, the works...
    • Colonial Defence Forces more or less affiliated to one of the above nations...
    • Private concerns like big corps security forces and private military companies
    • Minor alien forces affiliated to the Terran Alliance
  • On the other hand the Galactic Council will regroup mainly alien armies usually using higher tech stuff and with a more space opera feel. For sub-factions I have, so far, the not-Tau (I should come up with a better name) and the Organisation of Unobtainium Exporting Planets and its Robot Army but a lots of other ideas spring to mind:
    • Pretty much any 15mm company alien empire can be member of the council (e.g. Khurusan's Pelagic Dominate or GZG's Crusties)
    • Some 28mm armies' background can also be adapted to fit (e.g. 40K Tau or Infinity Combined Army)
    • And the Galactic Council...
    • A force of Council enforcers/stormtroopers might be a good idea too...
Most of my minis should be able to fit in one of those two (with a few exception like hive-minded killing machines Ă  la Aliens/Tiranyds/Space Demons). This organisation should allow a pretty good flexibility with an eye for campaigns: two clear sides into which to group armies while still a loose enough structure to allow armies of the same side fighting each other without stretching one's disbelief too much. Some minor alien races will probably have the options of alligning themselves with either side to facilitate strength matching...

What's in the box? ClearHorizon Miniatures Drop Pods

It seems like just a few weeks ago that Mr Harold came out with the concept for these Drop Pods. My first reaction was, like many people I assume, "how come nobody thought about filling that particular obvious gap in 15mm sci fi minis?" My second and close reaction was "ooooh, shiny; me want; me need!"

So a quick paypal-fu move and just 15 days waiting later, 5 of those babies show up in the mail!

After a couple of disapointements (here, here and here) with resin molding, this model does indeed restore my thrust in that medium/process! While Old Crow Models is still my personnal champion for sheer surface texture, those pods really have incredibly crisp details; bravo zulu to the caster! If anything, my picture doesn't do justice to the level of detail!

What's in the box? Brigade Models Pacific Federation Light Tank

I initialy only ordered the MBT, the APC and the "flyer", but that range grew on me and I went back for more, namely the light tank, in order to round up my Organization of Unobtainium Exporting Planets (O.U.E.P.) (I've got all the models now, just waiting for the bases and off to the painter they go!)
